This rare World War II photograph shows a Lockheed F‑5 Lightning s/n 42-68205, on the ground in England. The F‑5 was the photo‑recon version of the famed P‑38 fighter, flying dangerous missions without guns but with cameras that helped win the war. 

This aircraft, rather than being stripped to it's natural metal skin, was painted overall with aluminum lacquer rather than bare metal. Antiglare wa O.D. and the upper two thirds of the rudders were white.  Also there were no squadron codes and the star and bar insignia dates the  photo to sometime after August 1943.
